Connecting in everyday life

We’ve all had one of those “the world is so small!” moments where you meet someone new and realize that you have a mutual friend, or you find out that your new colleague went to the same college as you did. In a world of now 8 billion people these moments strangely happen more often than we think. They serve as a reminder that we're all way more connected than we may realize.

At the core of our being, we all crave meaningful connection. It's one of the key six human needs, and its importance is often underestimated. Studies have shown that humans are actually hardwired for social interaction, and good connections with others can lead to immense fulfillment in life. We weren't meant to live in isolation, and when we do, it can have a negative impact on our wellbeing. So how can we make sure that we are staying connected?

  1. Make an effort to meet new people

One of the best ways to expand your network is to simply put yourself out there and meet new people. Hit up that breathwork class, book that group boxing workout, or just strike up conversations with random people throughout your day. The more people you meet, the greater the chance that you'll find someone with whom you connect on a deeper level.

  1. Stay in touch with old friends

Just because you don't see someone regularly, or live in the same city as them anymore doesn't mean your relationship should stall. Stay in touch by sending them a voice note or text when you think of them, making plans to meet for coffee or lunch when you're in the same city, or even just sending a funny meme on Instagram. Those little touch points really matter and your future self will appreciate the time you took to nurture those relationships.

  1. Volunteer your time

Not only is volunteering a great way to give back to your community, but it's also a great way to meet people who share the same passion for that cause. Find a local organization that aligns with your values and sign up for a shift! You never know who you'll meet or what kinds of connections you'll make.

Connection is vital for our wellbeing, and we live in such a fast-paced world where it can be easy to forget the importance of taking time to be fully present and to build connections wherever we are. Making the effort to stay connected is essential for a happy and fulfilling life. So get out there and keep connecting!
